UCBA Mentor Program Curriculum

Spring 2016-Spring 2017

Goals:

  • Function as a comprehensive resource for professional development throughout mentee’s graduate career
  • Match mentee one-on-one with experienced UCBA members for individualized mentorship
  • Foster the exploration of diverse career options for PhD
  • Provide a safe space to discuss graduate school challenges and concerns
  • Familiarize mentees with formal resources and organizations at University of Chicago and the greater Chicago community that may assist with professional development
  • Complete personality assessments to help define skill and career matches
  • Build mentee’s networking skills through attendance of networking events and informational interviews
  • Customize mentee’s graduate experience to better match career ambitions

Program Schedule                      

Spring Quarter 2016

  • Self-assessments (HPI, MyIDP, Myers-Briggs, etc.)
  • Provide professional development resources
  • Require attendance at one networking event

Autumn Quarter 2016

  • Work on a “pitch” that represents mentee’s brand
  • Review and critique resume-Require attendance at two networking events
  • Make one solid professional connection through networking

Winter Quarter 2017

  • Conduct at least one informational interview with a professional in a field of interest
  • Require attendance at two networking events
  • Make one solid professional connection through networking

Spring Quarter 2017

  • Explore externship/internship opportunities for the summer
  • Attend one UCBA Trek event
  • Conduct two informational interviews with a professional in a field of interest
  • Require attendance at two networking/professional events
  • Make two solid professional connections through networking
